Popular online genealogy academy Pharos Teaching and Tutoring Ltd has been purchased by former tutor Dr Karen Cummings DipGen, with the change in ownership effective immediately.
Dr Cummings (pictured right above) is an established genealogist and former Pharos student who has taught and written Pharos courses for the past six years and has been the Course Director since October 2019.
Helen Osborn (pictured left above), co-founder and owner of Pharos since its launch in 2005, said: “Karen shares my love of imparting the best genealogy tutoring and inspiration to all genealogists no matter where they are in their educational journey.
“She brings many skills to Pharos so I am really thrilled that she is stepping into my place.
“I know the company will not only be in safe hands, but will build on current successes and go from strength to strength.”
Karen said: “We have the most amazing group of Tutors here at Pharos, I am in exceptionally good company.
“Like the other tutors, I am passionate about delivering high quality courses to students, providing them with tools to become better genealogists, and giving them the opportunity to ask questions along the way.
“We have over forty different courses currently running and more in development, and I am very excited about taking Pharos forward into the future.”
Pharos provide topic-based online genealogy courses both individually and as part of certificate programmes.
They have been particularly important to family historians while family history courses and events in the real-world are cancelled due to the coronavirus lockdown.
Their latest courses, starting in July, are ‘Scotland 1750-1850 – Beyond the Old Parish Registers’ with Chris Paton and ‘Before the Modern Census – Name-rich sources from 1690-1837’ with Else Churchill.
