Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine readers successfully transcribed 28,511 family history records on our annual Transcription Tuesday volunteer event on 5 November.

Volunteers helped transcribe records for two projects online.

For the first project, in partnership with free family history website FamilySearch, volunteers transcribed Irish Catholic parish records.

Kaylee Rae Shell, FamilySearch’s indexing project coordinator, said: “On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, we had 404 batches indexed and 622 batches reviewed for Ireland projects leading to approximately 25,000 new searchable records! This is an amazing accomplishment for a single day, and we hope that people who participated enjoyed the experience and will continue to help us transcribe these records.”

We also partnered with the National Library of Wales (NLW) to transcribe a 1923 peace petition, signed by over 390,000 women in Wales. The NLW also hosted an all-day volunteer Transcribathon. In total, 3,511 entries were transcribed.

Nia Dafydd, promotion and marketing manager at the NLW, said: “The Wales Women’s Peace Petition has been such an important way for the National Library of Wales and our partners to open up discussions on the personal impacts of war, world peace and how the actions of our ancestors over a century ago can inspire change in the present. Having digitised the petition, transcribing allows us to make it much more accessible, and we are extremely grateful to all of our volunteer transcribers who have contributed their time, effort and enthusiasm towards this goal. Yesterday’s Transcribathon was a joyous community event which also shows the value of coming together to make sense of our past. Thanks again to all who took part. We hope it will inspire more people to carry us forward to reach our goal.”

Sarah Williams, editor of Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine, said: "Thank you to everyone who took part this year. To have transcribed so many records is a remarkable achievement and we are delighted that our readers will have made it easier for others to access these records in the future."
