Actor Andrew Garfield was born on 20 August 1983 and is 41 years old. His career accolades include playing superhero Spider-Man, being nominated for two Academy Awards and winning a BAFTA and a Tony award.

Andrew will trace his family history in the first episode of the 2025 series of Who Do You Think You Are?, showing on BBC One on 22 April. Here's five things you might not know about the star...

1. Dual citizenship

Andrew was born in Los Angeles to an American father and a British mother and holds both American and British citizenship. His family moved to Surrey, England, when Andrew was three.

2. Web-slinging superhero

Andrew played Spider-Man in the films The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before reprising the role in 2021 in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

3. Faith on film

In 2016, Andrew played two roles rooted in faith – a 17th-century Jesuit priest in Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese, and Desmond Doss, a Second World War pacifist combat medic, in Hacksaw Ridge, for which he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar.

4. Musical novice

Andrew had never sung professionally before taking on the role of Jonathan Larson in the musical Tick, Tick... Boom! After being approached by the film’s director, Hamilton composer Lin Manuel Miranda, he underwent year-long vocal training and learned how to play the piano. He went on to win a Golden Globe for the role and earn his second Oscar nomination.

5. No stranger to grief

Andrew has spoken publicly about his bereavement after his mother Lynn's death in 2019, including appearing on Sesame Street to explain grief to children.
