Vicky McClure will trace her family history in the first episode of the new series of Who Do You Think You Are? on Thursday 15 August 2024. Here's five things you might not know about the star...

1. Music for a cause

Inspired by her personal experiences with dementia in her family, Vicky McClure co-founded the Our Dementia Choir in 2019. The aim was to bring together people living with dementia to sing and perform, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of music. What began as a BBC documentary has now evolved into a team showcasing their performances at different venues and events.

2. Nine to five

Vicky joined to study drama in college but left after four months due to financial struggles. It was then she started work in retail before taking up office jobs. For her, this was not just to make ends meet but also a way to stay grounded and connected with everyday life.

3. Daytime nightclub

Vicky, along with her husband, the actor and writer Jonny Owen, recently started daytime dances across the UK, targeting those over 30. The party starts at 2pm and the last entry is at 4pm, with enough time to enjoy the rest of the evening at home without struggling to get a taxi back. The team’s first disco experiment in Sheffield City Hall sold within 48 hours.

4. Empire honour

The actor was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 for her contributions to drama and charity.

5. Nottingham notable

For the Wollaton-born actress, having a tram named after her was a glorious surprise. Vicky’s was the 38th tram to be named after a local figure, joining a list of others like DH Lawrence.
